Sonia Godding Togobo is a CCE nominated television editor and award winning video director with over twenty years of broadcast and media experience. She is the editor behind the award winning CBC documentary Mr. Jane and Finch for which she earned her CCE nomination and the Hot Docs ‘Top Twenty’ Film, Shella Record – A Reggae Mystery.


Her first feature, Adopted ID, explores race and class from the perspective of a Haitian adoptee. The film played at film festivals all over the world including The Images of Black Women Film Festival in London, England, The BlackStar Film Festival in Philadelphia, The Hollywood Black Film Festival and Caribbean Tales Film Festival. In 2016, Sonia co-produced and directed In The Black: Canada, a documentary web series and video installation which gave voice to and space for Black Canadians to tell their own stories, authentically. The Windsor Project, the last incarnation of In The Black, is now a part of the Art Gallery of Windsor’s permanent collection. Sonia was part of the award-winning directing team behind The Akua Benjamin Legacy Project produced by the award winning producer, Alison Duke. Sonia has also had the honour of documenting the impactful work of progressive initiatives and organizations such as Confronting Anti-Black Racism for the City of Toronto, Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network, The 100 Strong Foundation and Women’s Health in Women’s Hands Community Health Centre.

Sonia is the Founder of A Black Woman’s Gazea networking and conversation series that builds bridges between filmmakers and their audiences. She is currently writing her first narrative film and developing a lifestyle series. When she’s not scrubbing through video, she’s scrubbing grass stains from her daughter’s soccer shorts. Along with her partner, their happy family travels the world in search of the best jollof rice and their next untold story.
